The development, certification and operation of complex flight-critical systems require excellent mastery of processes, methods and competencies among the teams and excellent management of all those involved.
The course addresses the key control factors for managers and shows how technical decisions are influenced by human factors and how these can ultimately affect safety.

First day

  • Course target

  • Properties of complex systems
    - Observability, controllability, analyzability
  • Human thinking and acting in complex environments
    - Complexity, uncertainty, fear, awareness, perception, abstract thinking, differentiated communication...
  • System security, reliability, costs, customer satisfaction
    - The management dilemma and proposals for its resolution
    - Safety and reliability. Multipliers or antagonists in terms of system safety...?

Second day

  • Summary of Day 1 and conclusions regarding the certification procedures for civil aviation products
    - Fundamentals of aviation law
    - ICAO; EASA Part 21; Design Organization Approvals Certification Specifications; Federal Aviation Regulations etc.
    - The principle of type approvals
    - Continuing airworthiness
    - Differences between the EU (EASA) and the USA (FAA); a look at China (CAAC)
  • Quality management and design assurance systems
  • ISO9100; ARP4754A; ARP4761; DO-178C; DO-254 from a management perspective and related to company objectives
  • Validation; Verification; Safety Assessments. The V-model, state of the art...?
  • Air law and product liability
